EXHIBITION STATEMENT
In this retrospective, I reflect on my effort to capture what I see as the essence of a place or a living entity in a particular moment.
Fifteen years ago, I started photographing the American West — its coast, deserts, mountains, and everywhere in between. This is where I’ve resided for a majority of my adult life, and this is where I am most at home. The American West continues to inspire my work, and I am grateful for its diverse landscapes and people.
In 2013, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I am lucky to be alive five years after such a diagnosis, and I continue to receive chemotherapy every other week. Although my energy level is low due to the treatments, I am thankful to be able to make images during my off-chemo weeks.
My goal remains the same today as fifteen years ago: to engage a viewer with my photo the way a poem may engage its reader. I seek to provide the viewer with a reason to pause, observe, or reflect, if only for a brief moment. I look forward to making more images as I continue to work at achieving this goal.
